How to disable backspace button

if we trap the backspace key in I.E 5.0 and above by returning false.. then how do we get around wit

In Netscape 4.x, you need to capture the onkeypress event, and look for 
an event where .which is 8, which is the backspace key... to disable it, 
return false from the event.
In IE, you need to capture the onkeydown event to get the backspace key 
before it performs the "back" function.  Similarly to Netscape, look for 
an event where .keyCode is 8, and return false.
It may not work in IE versions prior to 5.0, however.
