Why does referencing a dynamically generated function (via layer.insertAdjacentHTML) give an error?

Gareth Hay, Jean-Bernard Valentaten, M Flaming,

As far as I remember layer isn't IE-Syntax, so I guess the function
isn't even genrated.

I'll engage my brain and suggest you meant a div or span identifier
where you wrote layer.
IE often reports 'unknown runtime error' when trying to insert or
insertAdjacent, Microsoft's responses to us have been 'er, don't know,
try something else instead' More often than not they say either nest
the layer in another, or place another layer inside the one you are
trying to insert into and insert into that one. If you follow.
They are actually quite unhelpful, as is IE's error line numbering,
quite often way off the mark.
