Brian Coogan,

With some email clients you'll get complaints from qmail about the
presence of bare LFs in email, with qmail refusing to send the email
citing the following URL:
      451 See http://pobox.com/~djb/docs/smtplf.html
which redirects to: http://cr.yp.to/docs/smtplf.html
What is confusing is that these email clients will have worked just
fine with sendmail and many other MTAs.
What is happening here is that your email client is violating internet
email standards and using LF inappropriately - see the URL above for
more info. Unfortunately qmail enforces these standards whereas most
MTAs just ignore them, thus serving to perpetuate the problem further.
If you want your non-LF-compliant email client to be able to send email
anyway you can do so through ofmipd, part of the mess822 djb package
which interfaces to qmail and cleans up messages. We have it listening
on a different IP on our mail servers for this reason, although we only
have a few non-LF-compliant client. Installing it is pretty trivial.
For info on ofmipd, see the mess822 package:
   http://cr.yp.to/mess822.html
There are some other solutions around but this appears the neatest for
a qmail site.
This info seems very hard to find elsewhere!!
