How to change the password of an user xyz if I have the MySQL root access?

Try executing the following query once you are in as 'Root':
SET PASSWORD FOR xyz@"%" = PASSWORD('xxxxxx');
Replace % with 'localhost' or leave it as '%' if you want to give
your 'xyz' user to connect to the mysql server from anywhere.
