Michael Chermside,
To invoke perl code from Python, you need the module "pyperl". I (the author writing this) have not used this, but I hear good things about it, and it can be downloaded from (ftp://ftp.activestate.com/Zope-Perl/). Try also this link: (http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/CodeDoc/pyperl/perlmodule.html) which includes sample code. There is also an effort (based on pyperl) to incorporate perl into Zope. A wiki describing the project is at http://www.zope.org/Wikis/zope-perl If anyone reading this has actually used pyperl and can describe it better, please update this answer!
