How can I direct php output to its calling html page?

You can use the referer for this purpose, for example:
echo "<META HTTP-EQUIV=\"Refresh\" CONTENT=\"0; URL=" . $_SERVER
["HTTP_REFERER"] . "\">";
This works on most browsers / platforms, though some browsers dont 
send 
a referer for privacy reasons, therefor it might be usefull to send 
the 
caller html page as a hidden form value or like and use that in youre 
refresh.
