which PHP to use, @home win ME, Hosting site uses Linux,mysql available, do i need *nix or win

The Linux-based hosting site will need the *nix version, but if you want
to test your pages on your own computer before uploading them, you can
use the Windows version of PHP along with web server software.  I don't
remember if Microsoft still has Personal Web Server for WinME, but you
can use a free web server like Apache (http://httpd.apache.org/) - just
be aware that there are still issues running PHP with Apache 2.0.  If
you're only testing the site on Windows, it may be simpler to use the
latest Apache 1.3.
Also, if you install any kind of server on your home computer, be sure
it doesn't allow access from your broadband connection unless you really
want anyone in the world to see it.  (Same with shared folders.) If
you're not using a personal firewall, you should at least configure
Apache to only allow connections from your own system.
