How can I prevent spam in my email client software?
What anti-spam tools exist to prevent UCE (unsolicited commercial email)?

Apr 21st, 2003 20:18
Shashank Tripathi,

Several solutions exist -- from server side to client side. Server side
solutions will use rules to ban emails from being delivered to you e.g.,
"If the sender's email address contains topspamcompany.com then delete
it" etc.
Client side solutions use a variety of creative methods to filter out
the junk too. Some of the well known solutions include (in no particular
order) --
o MAIL SHELL (http://www.mailshell.com)
Works with Outlook as a plugin, but also supports other clients
through server side pop email addresses. Costs 30 USD. One of the best
there is in terms of catching spam.
o MAILWASHER (http://www.mailwasher.com)
FREE! However, it sits separately from your email client and will
mark messages as "blacklisted". So, in essence it learns your
preferences. Some people may not like that it works separately
from your email tool (and you have two programs running) but if you
dont mind that, this is a good solution.
o SPAM INSPECTOR (http://giantcompany.com)
Catches most of the spam, very neat interface and is fast. Has
Outlook version as a plugin, but supports Outlook Express etc as
  well.
o SPAMNET (http://www.cloudmark.com)
Is beta as of now (for good reason) because unlike the above three,
this may be guilty of some false positives (marking OK emails as spam)
  but hey, it is free!
o I HATE SPAM (http://snipurl.com/ihatespam_free)
Free! And does an impressive job of it!
o SPAM KILLER (http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/msk/default.asp)
Used to be a great tool until acquired by McAfee and made into a
proprietary bloatware. This may work for some, especially if you
subscribe to other products from McAfee.
