What is an Application server

Application server is software where you can deploy applications.
Application servers has to conform to standards released by Sun
Microsystems. J2EE specification 1.3 is the latest.(2003)
Application server usually contains two parts 
1) Web Container
  Hosts web applications. JSP servlets
2) Application Container
  Hosts Aplication like EJB connectors
Popular ones are JBoss, Weblogic, WebSphere
