Database: Relational: History: Inventor: Who invented the relational
database?
---
The relational database was invented by Dr. Edgar Frank Codd (called
"Ted") (1924-2003), a mathematician from Oxford (UK), while working as
an IBM researcher in the IBM San Jose Research Laboratory (USA).
---
In June 1970 he published an article called
'A relational model of data for large shared data banks',
which appeared in the ACM (=Association for Computing Machinery)
magazine, Vol. 13, No. 6, pp. 377-387

---
This article laid the foundations of the theory of relational
databases.
---
That article showed a theory of how to store data in rectangular tables
(containing rows and columns) and then use operations (based on
mathematical set theory (like unions, subsets, ...)) to handle this
data further.
