It depends on the domain you wish to register, and with whom you wish
to register it with.
Public top-level domains (*.com, *.net, *.org, *.de ...) are generally
more expensive than second-level (*.ltd.uk, *.co.uk ...).
In 1999 it became possible to register domains through a variety of
organisations which means cheaper domains for all. Shop around! You
will find .com/.net/.org domains costing anywhere from $10 to $40 a
year depending on the company you purchase them from, $10 a year is
reasonable. Do not be fooled into paying more unless you really love
the company. Sure some offer additional features but the seller of a
domain really can't offer much to you so again, don't be fooled.
Here's a list of official domain registrars:

And related information:

Because so many people sell domains it'd be difficult to list them here
but the one company you do NOT want to register with is Network
Solutions as they are seriously evil while a popular (cheap) company is
godaddy.com
After you own a domain if you want to have this domain online, and/or
use it for email, you'll need to find a web host. Good luck with
that :)
