One simple way (Funny way)
go to sites which have applets (Ex: http://www.javaranch.com).
And they will tell you whether you have a Java Plug-in installed

present

 1. -Click button Windows 'Start'
 2. -Select from list 'Control Panel'
 3. -Check visually if the 'Java coffee cup' icon is present
 4. -If not present, then the Java plug-in is not installed

Method: Check in 'Add/Remove programs' if the 'Java 2 Runtime 
environment' program is present

 1. -Click button Windows 'Start'
 2. -Select from list 'Control Panel'
 3. -Double click on icon 'Add/Remove programs'
 4. -Check visually in the list if the 'Java 2 Runtime environment'
     program is present
     1. You should see e.g.
