How long a variable resides in memory, how can i remove it?

A variable stays in memory as long as a person is viewing that 
particular document. You may pass a variable along by adding 
?varname=value to the end of the URL for a linked file.
You can't delete a variable (and why would you with such a short life?), 
but you can clear it by:
  $var = "";
