How do I determine the free space on my partitions?

Use the df command.
Example output:
Filesystem           1k-blocks      Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1               497667    118800    353165  25% /
/dev/sda5              7415699   5532220   1499126  79% /usr
If you deal in megabytes
df -h (human readable)
