Possible cause:
A plug-in (e.g. the PKWare plug-in)

Possible solution:
Remove that plug-in (e.g. the PKWare plug-in),
e.g. via Microsoft Windows Add/Remove programs.

This was a very hard problem to solve.
It persisted e.g. after several Window repairs,
installing Microsoft Windows service pack 1,
installing Microsoft Windows service pack 2.

After systematically removing zip related programs it showed
that the PKWare plug-in was the cause in this case.

After I removed this plug in via Windows 'Add/Remove' programs
this behavior (=blank screen with icon
on top left) this problem was finally solved.
