What is FTP?

Karl Fry,
FTP is an acronym that stands for "File Transfer Protocol".
Connecting to a computer on the internet via FTP allows you to view a
portion of that host's file structure and upload and/or download files
directly. This can be used to distribute large files for download, to
upload files to your website, or other similar uses.
You connect to FTP via an FTP Client, or software that facilitates
FTP. There are many different FTP clients out there. Below is a
short list of popular FTP clients that you may wish to search for at
http://download.com or any search engine, to get more information:
WS_FTP
Smart FTP
Cute FTP
Leech FTP
Filezilla
BulletProof FTP
{Note: I haven't used all of these programs personally, and don't
endorse any of them specifically. I prefer to use my old, free copy
of WS_FTP 95 - so if you can find that somewhere online, I do
recommend that one!}
PowWeb also has its own free, web-based FTP client which you can log
in to here:

At PowWeb you have a set amount of webspace, and you can connect to
this space via FTP to create folders, upload your website files, or
even download a backup of your website.
