How can I add extra domains to my hosting package?

Sep 2nd, 2005 07:16
Karl Fry, http://kb.powweb.com

PowWeb offers two kinds of add-on domains: Pointer Domains and
Serviced Domains.
Pointer Domains allow you to point the HTTP traffic for a domain to
your hosting package, however they share the same DNS and SMTP
settings as the primary hosted domain. This means that they cannot
have custom DNS settings (like an MX record that points to an external
exchange server) or SMTP settings for specific email addresses. You
can add forwarding to a Pointer Domain, which will forward all email
to the corresponding address at the primary domain. For example,
email to abc@pointer.com will be forwarded automatically to
abc@primary.com, and xyz@pointer.com will be forwarded automatically
to xyz@primary.com. Pointer domains cannot send out email, however.
Serviced domains provide all that Pointer Domains do, but they also
include their own individual DNS and SMTP service so that you can set
up MX and A Records, CNames, and individual email addresses that have
full sending and receiving permissions. They essentially function
just like the primary domain.
You can have up to 3 pointer domains per package, and they are free.
You can have up to 3 serviced domains per package for a one-time fee
of $20 apiece. The total maximum number of domains per package is 7:
1 primary, 3 pointer, 3 serviced.
To add a serviced or pointer domain, log into the OPS control panel at
http://ops.powweb.com - click on "Packages" at the top, scroll toward
the very bottom, and enter the new domain under "Additional Domains"
(without www) and click on "Add Pointer Domain" or "Add Serviced
Domain", depending on which fits your needs per the above
criteria/pricing.
---
Note that initially all domains on a hosting package will point to the
Document Root, or the htdocs folder in your FTP. You can use
a .htaccess (an Apache Webserver configuration file) to route traffic
for individual domain names to subfolders inside htdocs, simulating
different websites. The address (URL) bar will not display the
primary domain name or the subfolders, so it will appear to visitors
as an entirely separate website.
The .htaccess code that you will use is below:
RewriteEngine On
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} 2nddomain.com
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !directory/
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ directory/$1 [L]
Simply replace "2nddomain.com" on line 4 with the pointer/serviced
domain you are adding, and "directory" on lines 5 and 6 with the
folder name where the new website files will be placed. Do not remove
any punctuation.
