Philip Olson, Nathan Wallace,
Both set of tags do the same thing, except <? is a short tag and can be disabled in php configurations (php.ini). One reason one may disable short tags is to allow XML, so <?xml will work. Have a look here : http://php.net/manual/en/configuration.php#ini.short-open-tag Using <?php also follows the up-and-coming PEAR standard, which can be read about here : http://php.net/manual/en/pear.standards.tags.php
