Is submitting to search engines necessary?

I still remember in the old days when search engine submission was a 
very important part and no website can do without it. I believe these 
days are over!
?Modern? Search Engines (SEs) operate in a different way now. You don?
t 
have to submit to them in order to be listed. You ask yourself how can 
this happen? Well the answer is simple: SEs discovers sites on the 
Internet by following links from a page to another or from one website 
to another. Your site only has to have one link to it from a page 
already ?known? by SEs and that?s it, your site will eventually be 
picked up!
The link can be from anything! It can be from a forum (such as having 
a 
signature pointing to your site), for from something you post on a 
newsgroup that have a link to your site, or a listing of your list on 
a 
directory, etc?
The above is valid for the most important SEs such as Google, of 
course 
there are still SEs that do require you to submit. These may be 
specialized SEs.
The Search Engines Submission is very old and general task to promote 
the site and still it is important. However, modern some Search 
Engines 
crawls your site automatically from the net and adds it into their 
databases but all search engines have their own criteria and algorithm 
to crawl the site. So the search engine submission is very vital part 
of website promotion. By search engine submission you can increase 
your 
site linking and Google and other major search engines crawl the 
particular page where your site is listed and might be gives it�s as 
back linking for your site. Coz of back linking increment your sites 
page rank will increase.
I think search engine and directory submission is necessary part of 
the 
web promotion. If your site will list on high ranking page then you 
will get benefit and your site ranking also goes high.
