Can Javascript open a http port and put any data received into a string?

Pete,
     By itself, No.  However, you can use the XMLHttpRequest object to 
send and receive HTTP requests and response, respectively.  The use of 
this object is part of what is now called AJAX.  Just as DHTML is 
merely about using JavaScript to "D"ynamically modify the "HTML" 
markup of the current web document, AJAX is a fancy acronym 
for "A"synchronous "Ja"vaScript and "X"ML -- but is not just for XML
