Physics: Dynamics: 3D: Poinsot construction: What is the Poinsot
construction?
---
The Poinsot construction is a method used in classical mechanics
to analyze the movement of a rotating rigid body in space.
---
From the equations of motion it follows that certain aspects
of the rotation movement can be represent by 2 coinciding ellipsoids
(one representing e.g. the energy in the system)
---
The rotation movement can be represented by corresponding movements
of and on this ellipsoids.
---
The paths traced by the ellipsoids have been given names like the
polhode path and the herpolhode path.
---
This paths are e.g. a result of energy constraints
(which forces the movement in this particular way)
