GI or glycemic index measures how quickly your body turns food into
blood sugar. If you drank a sugary drink your blood sugar level would
rise very quickly so we say that sugary drinks have a high GI. By
comparison if you ate some lentils the impact on your blood sugar would
be slower. Lentils have a low GI.

The idea of the GI diet is to eat less calories by eating more low GI
foods and less high GI foods. Low GI foods give you energy over a 
longer
period of time so they leave you feeling less hungry and less likely to
snack but as with all diets you have to watch the calories.

The benefit of the GI diet over many other diets is that you are not
trying to control your desire for eating by will power alone. Instead
you are eating foods that give you a satisfied, full feeling. As it 
does
not feel like a diet it is easier to maintain.
The Atkins diet attempts to achieve a similar result (that full 
feeling)
by encouraging people to eat large amounts of protein and few
carbohydrates. The Atkins diet can have very good results and lots of
people loose weight by following it. However many people complain that
eating so much protein gives them headaches, bad breath and wind. The
Atkins diet can also be high in cholesterol and may have a negative
impact on your blood pressure. The GI diet has no such side effects, 
and
most people say they feel great on it.
