how can I set the editmask value on a field based on the contents of a previous field?

Gary,
     There is no built-in edit mask concept in JavaScript or HTML, so 
the answer to the question you're asking would be unique to whatever 
script you're using to emulate edit masks in a web page.  Not knowing 
what script you're using, and likely not being familiar with it 
anyway, not many people could answer your question definitively.
