Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the method used to acquire higher
positioning in search engine results pages (SERPS) of search engines
such as Google.com, MSN.com and Yahoo.com.
Each search engine has a WebCrawler (or spider). The spider's job is
to crawl through URLs posted on websites. As the spiders make their
way through the Internet, they look for specific information on each
page of each website and record the information into the search
engine's database. The processing of this information is referred to
as the "search engine's algorithm".
Search engine optimization experts study these algorithms, experiment
with development websites and report their conclusions. The result
from these studies is non-conclusive data about the content on web
pages that have been seen with a high rank in the search results.
This data includes web page scripting (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc),
meta tags, logic, sequencing, formatting, file size, load time, and
keyword proximity, density, frequency and prominence. All of these
variables may play a key role in the ranking a web page will have in
the search engine results.
Some search engines admit to using a calculated number of incoming
hyperlinks as part of the search engine algorithm. Google, for
example, has even posted a webpage to help web designers understand
part of their algorithm. The webpage is here:

Google.com is currently the largest, most-used search engine on the
Internet. Their spider is referred to as "The Googlebot". Google
features a special section just for web designers to get their
websites into the Google.com database more effectively. This site is

Currently, the second largest search engine is Yahoo.com. Their spider
is called "Slurp", and their algorithm is thought to be less inclusive
to incoming links. So web designers who have a greater understanding
of search engine optimization may have an improved advantage when it
comes to the positioning of the website in the search engine results.
The third largest search engine at the time of this writing is
MSN.com. MSN is though to be even less demanding on incoming links
then Google or Yahoo!. Several websites have been developed and
submitted to MSN with 0 incoming links and have ranked in the top page
of MSN.com's search engine results page.
Search engine optimization may play a large part in ranking of web
pages on search engine results pages. Understanding these practices
could help improve a website's visibility and increase traffic volumes.
Internet Marketing
--------------------------
Internet marketing is a component of electronic commerce. Internet
marketing can include information management, public relations,
customer service, and sales. Electronic commerce and Internet
marketing have become popular as Internet access is becoming more
widely available and used. Well over one third of consumers who have
Internet access in their homes report using the Internet to make
purchases.
