THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A FREE FLIGHT
You’ve seen them advertised. You might even have bought one. Flights
that cost 1p or even less. You probably thought you were getting a
fantastic bargain, but, as you discovered when all the unavoidable
extras were added on, the bargain was not that fantastic after all –
given that we’re all used to getting rock-bottom prices for our fares.
What seemed to be free actually cost you £20 or more for a one-way
flight.
The Office of Fair Trading has now warned budget airlines to include
taxes and ‘non-optional’ costs such as fuel duties in their advertised
fares. And the Association of British Tour Operators has said that it
will make sure all its members comply with its Code of Conduct and
include all unavoidable charges in their prices. Airlines and holiday
companies do not have to include optional or avoidable charges such as
excess baggage fees or on-board meals.
Travellers will welcome this new ruling, which will enable them to
compare, like for like, the offerings of different operators. Up to
now, in the free-for-all of ticket pricing, consumers have often been
left stranded and confused, and that’s no good for consumer
confidence.
So from now on you’ll know your freebies from your frills.
