Where To Go And Why?

Hi,
The Rio carnival in Brazil is over and the hotel prices along the
Copacabana seafront are back at affordable levels. The weather however
is still a warm 33C. In Brazil the sunny and smiley Cariocas are among
the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.
Best For: Beaches and bikinis. Here, barefooted joggers go for a run
along the promenade in the world’s skimpiest swimwear. If they catch
you staring, they’ll only smile harder.
Where To Stay: For out-and-out luxury, splash out at the Copacabana
Palace, a Twenties landmark and South America’s most famous hotel,
with a magnificent courtyard, swimming pool and cocktail bar.
What To Do: Take the shaky cable cars up Sugarloaf Mountain, and to
the foot of the Christ statue. Go early on Sunday morning to avoid the
hordes if you want unimpeded pictures of your with our arms
outstretched.
Top Tip: When the sun goes behind the tower blocks of Copacabana (at
about 4pm) pick up your towel and find a spot amid the volley balling
beauties on Ipaneme instead.
Do Something Different: Go hang-gliding over the city. Strapped to a
pair of wings with an instructor, you will glide from the top of a
mountain to a soft landing on the beach.
Where To Go: We recommend that you try to venture beyond the thousands
of miles of beach to explore Brazil's other remarkable attractions:
the traditional Afro-Brazilian culture of Salvador, the colonial towns
of Ouro Preto, Sao Luis, Parati and Olinda or the wetlands of the
Pantanal, one of the best wildlife preserves in South America. Rio
might draw you to Brazil the first time, but the country's unexplored
corners and breadth of attractions will make you want to go back.
Travel With: The UK-based adventure tour operator AwimAway.com (020
7430 1766, www.awimaway.com) offers tour to Brazil at low-cost.
