The Trans-Siberian is not a train but the longest railway in the world
covering 9001 kms from St Petersburg, in the northwest of Russia, to
Vladivostok, a port on the coast of the Sea of Japan that is home to
Russia’s Pacific fleet. The ‘Trans-Sib’, as it is nicknamed, crosses
no fewer than seven time zones. Little has changed since it first
began operations in 1904.
A number of operators offer tours based on travel on the Trans-Sib,
with diversions and detours for trekking, rafting, riding and camping
with the nomads or stopovers in cities along the way, such as
Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. Most trips can be taken west-east, starting
from St Petersburg or Moscow, or in reverse, starting in Beijing or
Vladivostok.
Love Dr Zhivago’s Lara? Now you can take a tour to commemorate the
50th anniversary of the publication of the novel Dr Zhivago by Nobel
Prize winner Boris Pasternak. Along the way you explore Perm, renamed
Yuriatin in the novel, the place where Yuri meets Lara; and travel the
route along the Chinese border on which the villain Komarovsky
kidnapped Lara in his private train.
Relive a fictional fantasy while you live a real one. UK-based tour
operator AwimAway.com is organising Dr Zivago tours. You can contact
them on 020 7430 1766, www.awimaway.com.
