Dark traffic is nothing but invalid SMTP traffic that comes through the
internet. Invalid traffic comprises of undeliverable messages and other
communications. Because these messages cannot be delivered to a valid e-
mail user, they are useless for the company. Some examples of such
traffic include directory harvest attacks (DHA), Denial of Service
attacks (DoS), messages to non existent recipient addresses, or
messages that should not be accepted by the enterprise network, or
malformed SMTP packets.
