Denial of service attacks are mechanisms to flood the network with
numerous requests simultaneously, which results in the traffic either
becoming slow or being completely interrupted. This is done through
SMTP connections that engage in packet flooding, mail bombing, etc. The
only good news is that these attacks do not cause permanent damage to
databases like viruses or worms do. A denial of service attack only
disrupts the network service for a while.
