What is website maintenance and how often is it required to be done?

Sometime virus and other spy wares attacks on our websites, and 
sometime we never now when our website is down and our visitors find 
Page Not Found error. To fight thease problems we need website 
maintenance. You can also do this very well if you do not want to hire
