The Initial run of Palace Of Wheels train with former Royal Saloons was introduced in 1982.This was replaced by Metre Gauge A/C train in 1990.The present broad gauge version was introduced in 1995. During the British Raj in India, The Maharajas of India had private Railway Saloons which were used exclusively for Royalty & their State Guests. The same concept was experimented in early 1980's by Indian Railway. In 1984, the Ministry of Railways in collaboration with Rajasthan Tourism, introduced a tour on this Maharaja Train Tour- where you sleep in private air-con cabins with plush interiors in the night & visit best of sightseeing spots & Fort-Palaces in the daytime.
