You can live and travel in India probably cheaper than anywhere in the world. However, for safety and health reasons it is better not to eat or stay in the cheapest restaurants and hotels. A decent hotel room will cost you around $30 [US] per day and up. A hired car with driver will cost you around $50 [US] per day. Meals are very cheap. Three dollars or less will get you a good vegetarian meal in most hotels. You can go cheaper but it is not recommended.
