Calcutta is now called Kolkata. The name change took place I believe in 1999. There are several popular places for tourists to visit in Kolkata. Academy of Fine Arts: Gallery of contemporary art with paintings and sculptures of India from 1900 to the present day. Asiatic Society: Established in 1784. Collections include valuable portraits and sculptures. There is a library in the general section that has over 100000 volumes. Asutosh Museum of Indian Art: Named after the great educationist Asutosh Mookerjee. This museum was set up for the purpose of collecting, preserving and exhibiting objects of Indian art and antiquity with special emphasis on Bengal. Museum was established in 1937. Birla Planetarium: One of the largest in Asia. Botanical Gardens: founded in 1786 along the west bank of Hooghly River. Indian Museum: Claims to have more than one million exhibits. Howrah Bridge: Completed in 1943 is built over the Hooghly River and is one of the busiest bridges in the world. There are lots of things to do and places to see in Kolkata.
