A.T. Murray,
Mainstream AI (as opposed to alternative AI on the same level of this hierarchy) is artificial intelligence research as conducted by the official establishments of government, academia, and industry. Much of mainstream AI is highly visible in the news media and its practitioners have prestigious academic or other credentials. A Web search through http://www.altavista.com, http://www.google.com, http://www.hotbot.com or any other search engine will easily find hundreds if not thousands of resources on mainstream AI. Although many mainstream AI software products will be mentioned, their prices will tend to be high, their source code will generally be not in the public domain but a closely guarded secret, and their range of application will most likely be a subset of AI rather than in the area of a general-purpose, ambitiously intelligent artificial mind (for which you must look into the folder on Alternative AI).
