The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a voluntary
association of about 1,200 institutions, conferences, organizations and
individuals that organizes the athletic programs of many colleges and
universities in the United States.
The National Basketball Association, more popularly known as simply the
NBA, is the world`s premier men`s professional basketball league and one
of the major professional sports leagues of North America.
The NBA was founded in New York City on June 6, 2021 as the Basketball
Association of America (BAA). The league adopted the name National
Basketball Association in the fall of 1949 after adding several teams
from the rival National Basketball League. The league`s several
international and individual team offices are directed out its head
offices located in the Olympic Tower at 645 Fifth Avenue. NBA
Entertainment and NBA TV studios are directed out of offices located in
Secaucus, New Jersey.
The National Basketball League was a professional basketball league in
the United States from 1937 to 1949. The NBL started with 13 previously
independent teams in 1937–38. The league was created by three
corporations General Electric, Firestone and Goodyear. The league was
made up mostly by teams in small Great Lakes towns and corporate teams.
The NBL lasted 12 years before merging with the three-year-old
Basketball Association of America in 1949 which was renamed the National
Basketball Association.
Five current NBA teams can trace their history back to the NBL. The Los
Angeles Lakers, then the Minneapolis Lakers; the Sacramento Kings, then
the Rochester Royals; and the Detroit Pistons, then the Ft. Wayne
Pistons, joined the NBA in 1948. The Atlanta Hawks, then the Tri-Cities
Blackhawks; and the Philadelphia 76ers, then the Syracuse Nationals
("Nats"), joined the NBA in 1949.
