Game Information :
PLAYERS : 3 - 7
INITIAL DEAL : 5 cards are dealt down to each player.
PLAY : There is a betting round after the deal. After the betting round,
each player may exchange up to three cards. Another round of betting
ensues, followed by the showdown. With fewer than six players, a player
may draw four cards if they show that their remaining card is an Ace.
WINNER : High hand
STANDARD VARIATIONS : Adding wild cards to play (and allowing
five-of-a-kinds if chosen).
HIGH/LOW : the highest hand and lowest hand split the pot.
LOWBALL : Lowest hand wins. Allowing for four card draw with an ace.
DOUBLE DRAW : After the first exchange and subsequent betting, there is
another exchange and betting round.
RULES : Five card draw is the most well-known poker game. Each player is
dealt 5 cards face down. There is a round of betting. Then players can
discard up to 5 of their cards and draw new ones from the deck. After
the draw, there is another round of betting.
Some play that you can not draw more than 4 cards, and you can only draw
4 cards if you have an ace (and expose it). Also, some have a rule that
to open on the first betting round, one must have a pair of jacks or
better. If no one has jacks or better, the hand is considered a misdeal.
STRATEGY : In a world ruled by Hold’em, draw poker is becoming a lost
art. Draw is not extinct though, just ignored by the cameras of ESPN and
Bravo. Due to the explosion of Hold’em, somebody who knows what they are
doing can clean up against players who have either forgotten the
strategy behind draw poker, or never took the time to learn the basics
of the game. In today’s article we will look at how to play the game
when holding two pair .
Playing with two pair can be a tricky proposition. These cards can go
either way, which can be a curse. It is not obvious whether or not they
are winners or losers. Caution is the word when holding two pair. If the
pot has been opened and raised, call when you have tens up or worse. Of
course if you have jacks up or better, you will want to re-raise. If the
pot is raise-opened chances are the player is working with only one
pair. The odds are about 3-1 that your two pair is a better hand. If
it’s three bets to you, fold anything tens up or lower, and cap with
jacks up or better. Playing this way increases your variance
considerably, but it also increases your win rate. If there has been a
number of raises and re-raises the best call is to dump anything worse
then jacks up.
You’ll see many players who just call two bets with aces up and then
check to the other one-card draw. They cost themselves several bets
every time they do it, plus increase their chances of losing the pot by
enticing other players in who now get correct odds to play. Don’t make
that mistake. Sure, you’ll cost yourself four bets or more instead of
two in the pots you lose, but that’s more than made up for in those that
you win.
