What should be the ideal screen size for designing my website?

The major chunk of population uses the 800x600 resolution. The number of
people using 640x480 resolutions has dropped so low now that they're not
worth worrying about. Those people will be very used to using their
horizontal scroll bar, so they won't be too irked by your site being too
big for their screen.
Make your images no more than 779 pixels wide. This allows space for the
scroll bar and borders.
The above answer was given a little while. The 800X600 resolution is
hardly used now a days. Given below are the newer recommendations:
Your pages should work at any resolution, from 800x600 to 1280x1024 and
beyond.
· Optimize for 1024x768, which is currently the most widely used screen
size. Design for the 1024x768 setting and ensure it contracts properly,
or 'transforms gracefully', to the 800x600 setting.
· Do not design solely for a specific monitor size because screen sizes
vary among users. Window size variability is even greater, since users
don't always maximize their browsers.
· Use a liquid layout that stretches to the current user's window size
(that is, avoid frozen layouts that are always the same size).
. Another way to handle the many browser variations is to make the
design stretch by basing the overall layout on a percentage of screen
real estate. This allows a design to conform to the available space,
regardless of browser or screen size.
