Backwater Tour in India

Jul 14th, 2008 06:10

Kerala's backwaters are the most popular tourist attraction of Kerala.
Backwaters are a chain of brackish lagoons and lakes that lie parallel
to the Arabian Sea coast of Kerala in south India. The backwater network
includes five large lakes linked by 1500 km of both manmade and natural
canals, fed by around 38 odd rivers. The backwaters extend to virtually
half the length of Kerala state.

It's an intricate network of innumerable lagoons, lakes, canals,
estuaries and the deltas of forty-four rivers that drain into the
Arabian Sea. Over 900 km of this labyrinthine waterworld is navigable.
The largest backwater stretch in Kerala is the Vembanad lake which flows
through three districts and opens out into the sea at the Kochi port.
The serene backwaters of Kerala are simple irresistible, but do take
notice of the superb coconut grooves by the sides and the beautifully
decorated boats that will take you into a journey without any jerk. This
tour package includes the best sought after places that need no extra
introduction in Indian tourist map. These houseboats are good, if not
better than those of Kashmir are.
One of the best ports along Malabar Coast and an important trade centre,
Alleppey is known for a large network of inland canals. A hub and a base
for most of the backwaters and boat cruises, has carved out quite a name
for Alleppey and large number of tourists visit the city every year.
These backwater cruises are the best way to see the glimpse of the rural
life style of Kerala where natives still indulge in the traditional,
outdated and laborious tasks of toddy tapping, fishing, coir-making
industry and prawn farming and see the greenery and the rich avian life
thriving in many of the lake islands.
