What is XSL?

Nov 21st, 2000 05:40
Michael Claßen,

XSL stands for Extensible Stylesheet Language. It is kind of the XML
equivalent of Cascading Stylesheets (CSS). Since XML data by itself
does not contain any information on how to render its contents, a
style sheet needs to be attached to it to convert it into HTML, PDF,
RTF, GIF or any other display format. XSL comes in two parts: XSL
Transformations (XSLT) allows for exactly that transformation of XML
documents in other formats. The still to be finalized XSL formatting
objects (XSLFO) define entities that can be displayed directly by an
XSLFO rendering engine.
