What is the difference between XML and SGML?

Nov 21st, 2000 06:36
Michael Claßen,

SGML is the parent of XML. It stands for Standardized General Markup
Language and is a standard in the publishing industry dating back to the
50's, having it's roots in IBM's GML.
The success of HTML and its limitations led to the invention of XML,
which is a simplified version of SGML, made suitable for use on the Web
by eliminating some of the more obscure (and powerful) capabilities of
SGML.
