can I use images and javascript to mimic to checkboxes

Let me see if I understand your question right. You want to use images 
instead of checkboxes.
Well that shouldn't be to hard.
I guess you know how to exchange images in a document when the mouse 
rolls over them (onMouseOver & onMouseOut).
Simply do the same trick but with the onClick-Handler.
