how can i detect the screen resolution in order to display layers correctly for each resolution?

The relevant properties are contained in the window.screen object, and
you could inspect these to set up your layers as you want:
window.screen.height is the pixel height (surprisingly!) of the user's
machine, and window.screen.width is the pixel width. These properties
are consistent across at least NN4, IE4 and NN6.
