How do I load/save files to a remote machine?

Feb 14th, 2001 05:34
Per M Knutsen,

This is very simple step by step procedure on how to load/save files
from your local copy of Emacs to a remote machine:
1) From the file menu, click on 'open file' / 'save file'.
2) Emacs will display, in the minibuffer, the location of the directory
where it thinks you'd like to load/save the file from/to.
3) If that location is incorrect, erase it (use backspace or, CTRL-A
and then CTRL-K)
4) type in the
following "/your_user_id@the_address_of_the_machine_you'd_like_to_FTP_fr
om_or_to:" (e.g. /joe@miriam.weizmann.ac.il:)
5) Click on tab twice, emacs will prompt you for your password, once
you type it in, it will attempt to establish a connection.
6) Once a connection is established, you need to specify to Emacs which
directory you'd like to look at, usually, this would be some place in
your home directory, therefore, type in "~/", which tells Emacs, I'd
like to be put in my home dir. (the other option is "/", which would
tell Emacs to start from the root of the server).
7) Type in the location of the file, or, use the tab key, to get Emacs
completion for it (note, if you use Tab, Emacs will display a buffer
with all the possibilities, you can click the middle button on your
mouse, on the file/directory you want, and load/go into the file,
directory you'd like.
8) If you want to save a file, after going into the right directory, ,
in the minibuffer, Emacs will prompt you for the filename.
