Is possible to generate, send & receive back ICMP messages directly in PHP instead of external execution of ping?

You can do that with sockets, by sending to a special port on the ip 
you want to send ICMP traffic to. It requires you know more about 
network traffic and might be a good idea to read the ICMP rfc too.
