Can the PHP include command be used with a virtual path?

You can use: include("../../myPathSomewhere/myFile.php"), this also 
works for require().
You can also use:
$myIncludePath = "/bob/somewhere/" ;
include ($myIncludePath."databaseRoutines.php") ;
