I get the error: Call to unsupported or undefined function imagecreatefromgif() when I try to use this function. But other image functions work normal

GD versions from 1.6.0 to 2.0.28 all lack GIF image support due to 
the Unisys LZW compression algorithm patent but this patent has since
expired.
Also, from the manual:
Only supported in GD versions older than gd-1.6.0 and newer than
gd-2.0.28. Read-only  GIF support is available with PHP 4.3.0 and the
bundled GD-library. Write support is avaliable since PHP 4.3.9 and PHP
5.0.1.
